Here are some supporting materials we’ve created for our new lesson this week. We are teaching on Jesus’ encounters with a rich young man and how no person can earn their way into heaven.

This passage is found in Matthew 19:16-26, Mark 10:17-27, Luke 18:18-27. Then said Jesus unto his disciples, Verily I say unto you, That a rich man shall hardly enter into the kingdom of heaven. And again I say unto you, It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God. When his disciples heard it, they were exceedingly amazed, saying, Who then can be saved? But Jesus beheld them, and said unto them, With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible.

Bible Story Video: Follow Jesus

Mark 10:17-31

10:17 As he was setting out on a journey, a man ran up and knelt before him, and asked him, “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”

10:18 Jesus said to him, “Why do you call me good? No one is good but God alone.

10:19 You know the commandments: ‘You shall not murder; You shall not commit adultery; You shall not steal; You shall not bear false witness; You shall not defraud; Honor your father and mother.'”

10:20 He said to him, “Teacher, I have kept all these since my youth.”

10:21 Jesus, looking at him, loved him and said, “You lack one thing; go, sell what you own, and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me.”

10:22 When he heard this, he was shocked and went away grieving, for he had many possessions.

10:23 Then Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, “How hard it will be for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God!”

10:24 And the disciples were perplexed at these words. But Jesus said to them again, “Children, how hard it is to enter the kingdom of God!

10:25 It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.”

10:26 They were greatly astounded and said to one another, “Then who can be saved?”

10:27 Jesus looked at them and said, “For mortals it is impossible, but not for God; for God all things are possible.”

10:28 Peter began to say to him, “Look, we have left everything and followed you.”

10:29 Jesus said, “Truly I tell you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields, for my sake and for the sake of the good news,

10:30 who will not receive a hundredfold now in this age–houses, brothers and sisters, mothers and children, and fields with persecutions–and in the age to come eternal life.

10:31 But many who are first will be last, and the last will be first.”

Printable Bible games are a great tool to have on hand in Sunday School. That’s why we love this series of free printable word search puzzles from Bible Games Central. They have options for several different passages and Bible stories.

1. God Creates the World

In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. God said, “Let there be light.” And there was light. God saw that the light was good. God called the light “day” and the darkness “night.” There was evening, and there was morning. It was day one…

2. Noah and the Flood

God saw how sinful the earth had become. But Noah was a godly man. So God said to Noah, “Make yourself an ark. I am going to bring a flood that will destroy every living creature.” You and your family will go into the ark. Bring a male and a female of every living thing into the ark. They will be kept alive with you. Take every kind of food that you will need. Noah did everything just as God commanded him….

3. Baby Moses

An Israelite man and a woman from the tribe of Levi got married. She became pregnant and had a son. She saw that her baby was a fine child and hid him for three months. After that, she couldn’t hide him any longer. So she got a basket made out of the stems of tall grass. She coated the basket with tar and placed the child in the basket. Then she put it in the tall grass that grew along the bank of the Nile River. The baby’s sister, Miriam, wasn’t very far away. She wanted to see what would happen to him…

4. Moses Crossing the Red Sea

Pharaoh sent for Moses and said to him, “Get out of here! You and the Israelites, leave my people!” So the Israelites left Egypt. The Pharaoh and his officials soon changed their minds. They said, “What have we done? We’ve lost our slaves and all the work they used to do for us!” So all Pharaoh’s horses and chariots and horsemen and troops chased the Israelites. As Pharaoh approached, the Israelites looked back. There were the Egyptians marching after them! The Israelites were terrified. They said to Moses, “Why did you bring us to the desert to die? It would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than to die here in the desert!” Moses answered the people, “Don’t be afraid. You will see how the Lord will save you today”…

5. God Provides Manna and Quail

In the desert the whole community told Moses and Aaron they weren’t happy with them. The Israelites said to them, “We wish the Lord had put us to death in Egypt. There we ate all the food we wanted. But you have brought us out into this desert to die of hunger.” The Lord said to Moses, “I have heard the people of Israel talking about how unhappy they are. Tell them, ‘When the sun goes down, you will eat meat. In the morning you will be filled with bread. Then you will know that I am the Lord your God.’ ” That evening quail came and covered the camp. In the morning the ground around the camp was covered with dew. When the dew was gone, thin flakes appeared on the desert floor. They looked like frost on the ground. The people of Israel saw the flakes. They asked each other, “What’s that?” They didn’t know what it was…

6. The Fall of Jericho

The gates of Jericho were shut tight and guarded closely because of the Israelites. No one went out. No one came in. Then the Lord said to Joshua, “I have handed Jericho over to you. March around the city once with all your fighting men. In fact, do it for six days. Have seven priests get trumpets made out of rams’ horns. They must carry them in front of the ark. On the seventh day, march around the city seven times. Tell the priests to blow the trumpets as you march. You will hear them blow a long blast on the trumpets. When you do, tell the whole army to give a loud shout. The wall of the city will fall down…

7. David and Goliath

The Philistines gathered their army together for war. Saul and the army of Israel lined up to fight against the Philistines. A champion named Goliath came out of the Philistine camp. He was over nine feet tall. Goliath shouted to the Israelites, “Choose one of your men to fight me. If he’s able to fight and kill me, we’ll become your slaves. But if I win and kill him, you will become our slaves.” Saul and the whole army of Israel were terrified. For 40 days, Goliath came forward every morning and evening…

8. Daniel in the Lions’ Den

Daniel was a good and able man. So the king planned to put him in charge of the whole kingdom. But the other leaders and the royal rulers were unhappy and tried to bring charges against Daniel. But they couldn’t find any fault with his work. Finally these men said, “It is impossible for us to bring charges against Daniel. If we find a reason, it will have to be in connection with the law of his God.” So the leaders and the royal rulers said to the king, “King Darius, you should give an official order that for the next 30 days, anyone who prays to any god except you will be thrown into the lions’ den. And you should write it down so it can’t be changed.” So King Darius put the order in writing…

9. Jesus Calms the Storm

One evening, Jesus said to his disciples, “Let’s cross to the other side of the lake.” So they took Jesus in the boat and started out, leaving the crowds behind (although other boats followed). But soon a fierce storm came up. High waves were breaking into the boat, and it began to fill with water. Jesus was sleeping at the back of the boat with his head on a cushion. The disciples woke him up, shouting, “Teacher, don’t you care that we’re going to drown”…

10. Jesus Feeds Five Thousand

The apostles gathered around Jesus and told him all they had done and taught. Many people were coming and going, so they did not even have a chance to eat. Then Jesus said to his apostles, “Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place. You need to get some rest.” So they went away by themselves in a boat to a quiet place. But many people who saw them leaving recognized them. They ran from all the towns and got there ahead of them. When Jesus came ashore, he saw a large crowd. He felt deep concern for them. They were like sheep without a shepherd. So he began teaching them many things…

11. Parable of the Good Samaritan

One day an authority on the law stood up to test Jesus. “Teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to receive eternal life?” “What is written in the Law?” Jesus replied. “How do you understand it?” He answered, “‘You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your strength, and all your mind.’ And, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’” “You have answered correctly,” Jesus replied. “Do that, and you will live.” But the man wanted to justify himself. So he asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?”…

12. Parable of the Prodigal Son

Jesus once told a story, “There was a man who had two sons. The younger son told his father, ‘Give me my share of the family property.’ So the father divided his property between his two sons. “A few days later, the younger son left for a country far away. There he wasted all his money on wild living. Then the country ran low on food and he began to starve. He went to work for a local farmer who sent him to feed the pigs. The son wanted to fill his stomach with the food the pigs were eating. But no one gave him anything…

13. Peter’s Miraculous Escape from Prison

King Herod Agrippa began to persecute some believers in the church. He arrested Peter and imprisoned him, placing him under the guard of four squads of four soldiers each. While Peter was in prison, the church prayed very earnestly for him. The night before Peter’s trial, he was asleep, fastened with two chains between two soldiers. Others stood guard at the prison gate. Suddenly, there was a bright light in the cell, and an angel of the Lord stood before Peter. The angel struck him on the side to awaken him and said, “Quick! Get up!” And the chains fell off his wrists. Then the angel told him, “Get dressed and put on your sandals.” And he did. “Now put on your coat and follow me,” the angel ordered…

The Lord’s Prayer is a wonderful prayer for children to memorize. It is THE prayer where Jesus shows us how we should pray. It was a simple prayer to show us that we don’t need to have long elaborate prayers and fancy words in order to speak to our Lord God.

  • Click on the preview above to download the printable PDF  (file includes both cursive and printed text handwriting practice sheets)

I have made these handwriting pages in order to help our students learn this important prayer. The first part has the entire prayer followed by the rest of the prayer broken into smaller parts in order to practice the smaller parts at a time in order to learn the entire prayer. I have made a print version as well as a cursive version, depending on which type of writing your child will be using. Children can simply trace over the Bible verse to practice their handwriting skills while learning the Bible memory verse.

Take Up Your Cross Teaching Visuals

“If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross daily and follow Me.” Luke 9:23
“For what is a man profited if he gains the whole world, and loses or forfeits himself?” Luke 9:25

These verses is such a visual for me as I read them. Taking up our cross entails denying ourselves and our wants/desires in order to do what God wants us to do. This isn’t just a one-time event either. The Bible says “daily”. This needs to be a conscience effort every single day to put God first instead of myself. Then look at Luke 9:25. This tells me why I shouldn’t be following after the world and my own desires…I lose everything! I can be the greatest person here on earth while I’m here, but what good does that do me? This life is such a short part of eternity. I need to follow after Him daily in order to live my life eternally with Him.

I created this visual to show these very important verses. It would be great to print out and show to your class as you are discussing them. You could even send it home for the children to work on memorizing.

Teaching preschoolers can be a fun challenge. You always feel like you’re repeating yourself….
Teaching preschoolers can be a fun challenge. You always feel like you’re repeating yourself…
The truth of the matter is that repetition is key for teaching preschooler. Well, repetition, patience and prayer.
Young children love repetition because it helps them master new skills and concepts and helps them to feel confident in what they’ve learned. In a preschool classroom, you should regularly see and hear repetition. If you have a poster on the wall that says ‘Jesus died on the cross’ and has a picture of a cross, you can use that same cross picture whenever you talk about Jesus and before long, you’ll notice toddlers hearing the word Jesus and rushing to the poster to point at the cross. Or, in two and three year old rooms if you start out saying, ‘Jesus died on…’ you’ll see children point to the picture and say ‘the cross.’
Sometimes as teachers though, we’re looking for new ways to keep repeating the same truth. This activity does just that. It allows you to emphasize big Bible truths while kids play a simple game and it can be adapted to fit various lessons and classroom settings.

Before class, prepare for the activity:

  • Print the attached ‘fishing for good news file’ on a color printer
  • Laminate the pages and cut out the fish
  • Tape large paper clips to the back of each fish.
  • Make 2 ‘fishing poles’ – you’ll need a plastic ruler or wooden dowel rod, about 18 inches (1/2 meter) of thin rope or yarn (wool) and large magnet (make sure it’s large enough that it couldn’t be swallowed)…. Tape one end of the rope or yarn to the ruler and the other end securely onto the magnet.

When you’re ready to play, place the fish face down on a blue towel or piece of blue paper. Hand the fishing pole to two kids and tell them to catch a fish. As they catch the fish, take them off the magnet for them and read the truth on the fish. Have the kids repeat after you and do motions for the truth. As they catch the fish, talk about the good news that you see on that fish. While they play, remind them that these are truths about God and that we learn all of these truths in the Bible.
The truths on the fish & motions for each truth are:

  1. God = forever – – point up then roll your arms in front of you
  2. God made the world – – point up then make a big circle with your arms
  3. Everybody has sinned – – make an X with your arms in front of your face
  4. Jesus came to earth – – rock a pretend baby
  5. Jesus died on the cross – – arms out like a cross
  6. Jesus came back to life – – start with hands on the ground then throw them into the air
  7. Jesus is the Forever King – – roll arms in front of body then salute

My new Preschool/Kindergarten class has a couple of young children. They are just starting out with letters and words. We are going over the lesson about when Daniel interpreted the writing on the wall for King Belshazzar. I thought it would be great to have the kids learn how to write the name of God to go along with this lesson. So I put together this very simple word search.

The name of God is written over and over throughout the puzzle. I only put the name of God up and down and forwards. There are no backwards or diagonal. I didn’t want them to get discouraged as they were trying to find the right letters in the right order. It’s sort of a first word search for early readers/spellers. I can just picture my class spelling G-O-D over and over while they are finding the name in the puzzle. Repetition is a great way to learn and this is just that.
To get them started, you, as the teacher, can talk about how to spell God and even write it on the white board to help them in the beginning. I don’t think it will take them very long to catch on though. Completing this puzzle will give your children confidence in their spelling/reading as well as teaching them how to spell the name of God.

Printable Esther Reading Plan
I really enjoy reading the book of Esther. It has a great storyline…a young maiden taken to the palace to then get picked by the king to become the next queen. But the story doesn’t end there…she then has to risk her life in order to save her people. There’s excitement, adventure, and suspense. Will she save her people? Will the king believe her? I love telling this story to the kids. Even the boys like it.

I want the kids to be reading the Bible more and more. Having a good Bible reading habit is essential to their spiritual life. I have put together this chart for the kids to read the entire book of Esther in just 30 days. It’s just a few verses a day in order to complete it. It’s a book that will keep their attention and one that isn’t too entirely long. It reads like a story and is easy to understand what is going on.
Encourage your kids to read the book of Esther in just 30 days!
